The Ferries Originated as a Solution to the Mud Faced with High Constancy of Earth in the Puget Sound Region
At one time, the Puget Sound region was a veritable quagmire of mud and debris, so much so that early settlers had to contend with the phenomenon.
In 1850, Capt. George Vancouver explored the region for an expedition along its western seaboards in order to establish a favorable route for access between the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean; he recommended utilizing puget Sound as a navigable body of water. However, his recommendations were not taken seriously for nearly two centuries after his voyage – until 1852!
On that fateful day, the steamship Esek Hopkins ventured into Puget Sound at the mouth of Discovery Bay on Whidbey Island. By then, the treacherous waters had been a haven for those seeking passage to foreign lands – it was thus deemed prudent not only by captains but also seamen alike. In 1910 however – amidst increasing population influxes from around the world – these expeditions eventually gave way to automobiles and ultimately became obsolete let alone navigational aid!
